RickyAIMRicky Kendal-Musician in Residence at Shands Hospital, Gainesville, Florida

What does an artist in residence do in a clinical setting? Artists in hospital programs around the country work in various settings within the hospital environment. Every program is unique in the sense that art processes may be offered at the bedside, in dialysis clinics, in hospice settings and in chemo-therapy units. A few hospitals have arts in medicine programs that are supported by private foundations. Other programs are supported by the hospital budgets, volunteer programs, partnerships with other institutions or privately funded.

Each program is unique and is created from one or more people who are committed to providing art as a healing technology for the patient, their family members, or the culture of healthcare. The experience of art extends beyond the patient to include nurses, physicians, clinicians and everyone in the healthcare environment.
